The 1891 census finds him aged 3 in Wallington, near Croydon, with one elder brother Stephen. He came to Felsted from Wellesley House, Broadstairs, leaving in July 1905. After a trip to British Columbia he returned to England in 1906 to study at the Camborne School of Mines, becoming an Associate of the Institute of Mining Metallurgy. He left Camborne in 1909 to take up a mining appointment abroad, and in 1914 he was on the staff of the Mexico Mines of El Oro. He returned to England and married Anne Davey Whitworth in Camborne on 2 September 1914. He was commissioned as a temporary Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 30th January 1915, serving in France and Flanders from 19th May 1915, and was wounded in the first Somme advance in July 1916. He was twice mentioned in despatches, and was awarded the MC on September 16th 1917, gazetted on January 1st 1918, when he was recorded as 'T/Lt (A/Capt'). The citation read "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while commanding his company. Under heavy machine-gun fire he selected sites for and constructed strong points. He also personally went out in front of the lines to bring in a small detachment who were isolated. Owing to his fine example of coolness his company, besides carrying on their own duties, made a counter-attack and captured several prisoners". On September 18th 1918 was awarded a bar to the Cross. On October 25th, when in command of the 11th Field Company, he was severely wounded and died at a casualty clearing station on October 29th, aged 30. 'We are all much distressed at losing him, as he was so universally popular and such an extremely capable officer' wrote his Divisional Commander. He is buried at Awoingt British Cemetery, France, Grave I.F.11, and is remembered at the Camborne Mining School. His next of kin was his wife, Mrs Annie Balcombe, living at the Grey House, Camborne, Cornwall.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | |||||||||||

StoryInhabitants of Stenalees and district heard with deep regret on Friday morning that this promising young man was killed on Good Friday by a shell bursting in the trenches. The sad intelligence was conveyed to the family by a letter from a Captain of the Company in which Corpl. Pascoe was serving. In the letter Capt. Walker said: " I have the exceedingly sad duty of announcing the death whilst on duty of your son, Corpl. W. R. Pascoe, of "H" Co. No. 2 Battalion Special Brigade, R.E. He was chosen to accompany myself and Lieut. Atkinson on a special work in the trenches and during the few days he has worked with and for me, I have formed the highest impressions of him as a man and as a soldier. To-day whilst in the front line trenches a shell fell in the firebag in which your son and Lieut. Atkinson were. Your son was killed at once and Lieut. Atkinson was badly wounded. He was hit in the head, but was not disfigured and suffered not at all. His face was peaceful and he can have no knowledge of the shell burst. He is buried in the soldiers' cemetery at Maricourt village. He died as a soldier in front of the enemy and has served his country well and faithfully, and I am sure he died happy, yours sincerely, F. G. Walker, Capt." Corpl. Pascoe was on;y 24 years of age, and was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Pascoe , of Cleaves. After leaving school he attended an Evening Class at Bugle for engineering, etc. where he won a scholarship entitling him to three years education at Camborne School of Mines. His term was up last July after a most successful career there, and he at once enlisted together with several of his school chums in the chemistry section of the Royal Engineers. Shortly after enlisting he was sent to France and after a short stay there was sent home suffering from gas poisoning. Previously he played the organ at the Wesleyan Sunday School and was a valued member both of the Sunday School and the Wesleyan Church. Much sympathy is being expressed with the bereaved parents who have another son Claude with the forces in Mesopotamia.
