When his platoon had become scattered during an attack and his platoon commander had been killed, Corporal Richards, although himself seriously wounded, reorganized the platoon under heavy shell and machine-gun fire and turned the platoon over to the next in command ready for the assault before he permitted himself to be evacuated, thereby setting to his associates an example of utter disregard for danger and remarkable coolness and courage in the face of the enemy. His brother William Richards, who is employed near this city received a letter from Corporal Richard's super officer this week in which the latter paid high tribute to the boy as a cool and brave soldier. The letter says in part: "It has never been my privilege to know a man who possessed such an unusual of degree of coolness and courage as did your brother. Time after time he has demonstrated that he was absolutely without fear, and his coolness and never failing cheerfulness even in most desperate conditions always served as a stimulant and example to his comrades. At the time of his being wounded he was acting sergeant and we have never had one more capable. On a previous occasion he had been recommended for decoration with the 'Distinguished Service Cross' and received a personal letter of commendation from our Division General. He has again been recommended for the 'D.S.C.' Accept, sir, the heartfelt sympathy of the officers and men of this division."
