His Father was a Journalist and in 1904 was the Editor for the Cornish and Devon Post in Launceston. Jack had attended Dunheved College (now Launceston College) by 1911 the family had moved to Plymouth. On leaving school, Jack began work in the National Provincial Bank at the Brixham branch where he was still working as a Bank Clerk when he enlisted at Paignton in 1914. He joined the Territorial Force in 1913 and was mobilized on the outbreak of the war. He was Acting Bombardier (No. 748) of the 2nd Devon Battery, the 4th battalion, the Wessex Brigade. He served with the Indian Expeditionary Force in Mesopotamia and was attached to the 15th Division Signal Company of the Royal Engineers, having obtained a First Class Certificate at the Kasauli Signalling School of Instruction. He died on August 15th 1916 in a drowning accident whilst on a steamer travelling up the Euphrates River at Nasiriyah. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Panel 3 and 60 and also on the Launceston War Memorial. The Roll of Honour, Volume V, De Ruvigny.
