Died at 2nd Casualty Clearing Station. StoryOn the day Gunner Thomas John Juleff died two other gunners, James Ellery Phillips 321649 and Frederick John Kessell 321675, were killed as well. Phillips and Juleff were killed outright but Kessell did not die immediately though he had suffered grievous wounds so died soon after on the same day. On the evening 1 Jun 17 the position was heavily shelled by the enemy with 5.9 and 8 inch High Explosive shells. Heavy casualties occurred. The battery Major and Captain were wounded; two 2nd Lieutenants suffered shell shock, and one died in hospital, 3 other ranks were killed and 6 other ranks wounded. Only one relief was in the battery on duty, a camp having been arranged for reliefs off duty. No casualties happened to the material and orders were received to dismount and take up a new position. The entry was initialled by Captain R E Ridgway, who had to be posted from 186th Siege Battery to take command of the battery.![]() ![]() | |||||||||||
