StoryFurther particulars relating to the death of Pte. Percy Hodge, youngest sone of Mrs S Hodge, Common Moor, St Cleer, are contained in a letter which Mrs Hodge had from a comrade of the deceased. “He was killed instantly in an attack on the German Lines, Percy was very much thought of by the boys of our platoon and we miss him very much, Percy and I were in the first wave to go over our parapet and in the noise and excitement of the attack I could not fine him and had to go on towards the German trenches, as their machine guns were busy. But from the boys who saw Percy I am informed that he suffered no pain. He received a Church of England burial and his grave was duly marked for identification purposes. Deceased was an old Liskeard Secondary School boy and went to Canada in the early part of 1914 and was engaged with his sister as a candy maker in Cleveland, Ontario. He responded to his Country’s call in April last year being recruited in Welland. He arrived in England the latter part of July. Having completed his training was sent to France on 27th September. Deceased spent a short time in the Liskeard Territorials prior to going to Canada.
