We have been in the trenches around La Basse, Givenchy and Cambrian in billets, around Betrune and Baurie. ??? when we came over to France we went from Southampton to Le Havre and by train from there to Steinbegne. We have had one round of the trenches and at present are going back to Lillers or Aire for 14 days or 3 weeks rest. Get a map of France and you will be able to see exactly where I am. I shall remember this Xmas as long as I live if its 100 years. We went in the trenches on the 22nd for 48 hours. Came out on Xmas Eve and we had as rough a time as its possible to have. I was (like all the rest) wet footed nearly all the time. Sometimes over our boot tops in water and mud. The 1st 24 hours was not so bad except for a heavy bombardment by the Germans. It was hell while it lasted. We had no ??? through the night owing to the fact of one sending over some gas. About 11 at night I was sent off to the front line to help carry one of our chaps who was wounded. We went up in 20 minutes but it took us 2 hours to come back. He was a heavy chap and the trenches were narrow, knee deep in water and mud in places. I got back alright but had to throw away my socks and the socks in the bottom of my boots. Put on clean and was fairly comfortable again. Next morning we were sent up to the front line. Going up of course got wet again up to the knees but had to stick it, couldn't keep on changing through the day. We watched the German lines through a periscope at night. We do 1 hour now and again looking over the ??? just duck one's head when a machine gun pelts busy, it wouldn't have been so bad but it rained hard the whole of the night . Every part of the trenches was flooded and falling in. Even the rain came through the dry-outs. One of our fellows was killed through a dry out falling in when he was asleep. When we weren't on sentry we took turns at the pumps to try and keep the trenches from getting too bad. The Germans were pretty quiet through the night for which we were very thankful but about 7 in the morning we were startled through the Germans blowing up a mine on our left but they misjudged the distance by about 30 yards. They sent over shrapnel to help the work of destruction. We had orders to clear out, took what we could but we lost a bit, even some fellows losing boots. An awful journey. I can't describe it. We were plastered in mud, wet through and hadn't shaved for 3 days. We got safely back into reserve then our people let them have it firstly with the big guns. What the use of it all was we don't know. In the reserves we cleaned off the mud as well as we could. Even had to scrub our rifles, a terrible state, had to throw more socks away. You can't do anything with them. We got back to billets and they left us alone for a time during which we were occupied over ??? etc, drying and cleaning. Just as well as we could. We spent a quiet time Xmas Day and Sunday till evening. Just as we were making ourselves comfortable for the night we were called out on parade. Went as we were. Majority with no ??? Marched off to the trenches as a fatigue party to carry back ??? the front line. Gas cylinders weighing nearly 2 ??? each. Our condition when we got back was worse than after the last ??? , boots full of mud and water and wet up to the backsides. The trenches were over our knees with something thicker than soup. We got back to billets at 2 in the morning in a state I can't again describe except to ????. We got own things as well as we could. Another pair of socks gone. Up at 6.45 am into one’s wet clothes. No time for breakfast. On the march for about 6 miles to where I am writing this and billeted for the night. A big barn I suppose. We may have a chance to get respectable again but it will take a few days. To keep me going I had some cheese and chocolate. The eatables in mother's parcel was eaten in the trenches. I hope you can read this. I am writing in a hurry but I have written it to show you a little more clearly some of our experiences ??? it’s better sometimes but that’s how we spent Xmas. I have just received your letter. Send me a few shillings when you can. It’s so useful in buying a few necessities. Don't forget candles, I pair of socks now and again. Don't send 2 pairs at once. I have to carry everything I possess everywhere even up the trenches. Chocolate is handy. Cakes are nice. We have to eat them straight away. I have plenty of tobacco don't buy that just a box or two of matches. The.doz mother sent went up the trenches. One of our fellows was carrying them in a sandbag with other things belonging to us which we thought would be useful. He fell under water with all the lot. I dried them, they are all right but you see what I mean, a little of anything useful when you can will always be much appreciated. A pair of boot laces and socks for the bottom of my boots, sometimes a tin of ??? candles for the billets and dry outs. You will under-……. Unfortunately the rest of the letter is missing.
