Phillips and Juleff were killed outright but Kessell did not die immediately though he had suffered grievous wounds so died soon after on the same day. On the evening 1 Jun 17 the position was heavily shelled by the enemy with 5.9 and 8 inch High Explosive shells. Heavy casualties occurred. The battery Major and Captain were wounded; two 2nd Lieutenants suffered shell shock, and one died in hospital, 3 other ranks were killed and 6 other ranks wounded. Only one relief was in the battery on duty, a camp having been arranged for reliefs off duty. No casualties happened to the material and orders were received to dismount and take up a new position. The entry was initialled by Captain R E Ridgway, who had to be posted from 186th Siege Battery to take command of the battery.St Stephen in Brannel War MemorialNanpean War MemorialSt Stephen in Brannel War Memorial - FaceRoyal Regiment of Artillery Memorial London | |||||||||||
