St Stephen-in-Brannel is situated in the Deanery and Hundred of Powder and lies in the centre of Cornwall to the north-east of Grampound. It is bordered by St Dennis and Roche to the north, St Austell and St Mewan to the east, Creed and Probus to the south and Ladock and St Enoder to the west. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bernel. The main villages are the churchtown, Whitemoor, Currian and Nanpean.
