Bodmin Gaol, which opened in l779,was built according to the designs and ideals of the reformer John Howard and was the first modern prison built in Britain. In the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the gaol was extended to overcome the problem of over-crowding and in 1859 it was replaced by new much larger buildings which are still present today.
